Ice Machine after Surgery

Sports Injuries

Robotic knee replacement has transformed the field of orthopedic surgery, offering patients a cutting-edge option for restoring mobility and reducing knee pain.

While the benefits of robotic-assisted knee replacement are recognized by many, determining who’s the right candidate is key for achieving life-changing results. By  understanding patient suitability, the procedure may deliver its full potential and provide better alignment, faster recovery, and lasting relief.

What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy refers to the use of cold water or ice to reduce swelling and pain. Cold temperatures are known to reduce the body’s inflammatory response, which decreases pain. This is one of the reasons why most people choose to ice themselves after any type of injury and why cryotherapy is extremely beneficial after surgery.

Studies have shown that cold therapy after knee or shoulder arthroscopy can reduce pain by up to 50% and opioid consumption by up to 70%! If used in addition to multi-modal pain control, cryotherapy is an effective treatment for postoperative pain control after surgery.

How Can I Implement Cryotherapy?

There are many ways in which you can implement cryotherapy:

  • The simplest of all is to fill a plastic bag with ice and place it over the postsurgical area.
    Pros: Inexpensive and readily available.
Cons: If not done properly, it can lead to frostbite of the skin, it can be difficult to keep the ice positioned on the extremity, and the sweating of the ice bag which can drench postoperative dressings and clothes.
  • Cryotherapy cuffs: they work by continuously circulating cold water around the affected area (Can be purchased at various medical supply stores or online).
Pros: They typically fit much more comfortably, do not slide off the extremity, are less likely to cause frostbite, do not sweat as badly, and overall make for a much more user-friendly and comfortable experience.
Cons: They can be expensive and bulky.
  • Active Ice and Vive units: our surgeon’s pick!
Pros: They are extremely convenient, allow for customizable treatment, and are easy to use
Cons: They are expensive, even more than chyroteraphy cuffs

What Are the Benefits of Cryotherapy?

Aside from helping with pain, cryotherapy is also an effective treatment for:

  • Decreased swelling and inflammation: Cold therapy helps blood vessels, which reduces blood flow to the area thus reducing swelling.
  • Faster recovery: By reducing pain and swelling, cold therapy helps speed up the recovery process, allowing you to return to normal activities sooner.
  • Reduced need for medication: Effective pain management through cold therapy reduces the need for medication, even opioids, that can have side effects and potential for dependency.
  • Improved mobility: Cryoteraphy can help improve mobility and range of motion in the affected area, which is crucial for rehabilitation.
  • Enhanced healing environment: Cold therapy creates a favorable environment for healing by reducing metabolic rate and damaged tissue in the area.
