Hardware Removal
Ankle plate removal is a surgical procedure performed to take out metal plates and screws that were previously inserted to stabilize fractured bones in the ankle.
These hardware devices, typically made of stainless steel or titanium, are used to hold the bones in proper alignment during the healing process after an ankle fracture. In most cases, the plates and screws remain in place permanently. However, they may need to be removed if they cause discomfort, irritation, or complications such as infection, restricted movement, or tendon irritation.
Why Perform Hardware Removal?
There are several reasons why a patient might require ankle plate removal.
- Some people experience chronic pain or discomfort due to the hardware pressing against soft tissues, nerves, or tendons.
- In other cases, the metal may be noticeable or cause irritation when wearing shoes.
- Hardware can also be removed if it becomes loose, shifts out of place, or if the bone has healed sufficiently to function without the support.
- Additionally, in rare cases, some individuals may have allergic reactions or develop an infection at the hardware site, necessitating removal.

The Procedure
Ankle plate removal is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning the patient can go home the same day. It is performed under either general or local anesthesia. During the surgery, the surgeon makes an incision over the site where the plate and screws were initially placed.
The hardware is carefully extracted, and the area is closed with stitches or surgical staples. The procedure is generally less complex than the initial fracture surgery, but the level of difficulty can vary depending on factors like scar tissue formation or bone growth around the hardware.
Recovery
Recovery after ankle plate removal is typically faster than after the original fracture surgery. However, the exact recovery time varies based on factors like the size of the hardware, the condition of the bones and soft tissues, and the overall health of the patient. Patients may experience some pain and swelling after surgery, which can be managed with rest, ice, and prescribed pain relievers. Weight-bearing is often restricted for a few days or weeks, depending on the surgeon’s advice, and physical therapy may be recommended to restore strength and mobility.
In most cases, removing the plate allows the patient to feel more comfortable, improves joint movement, and reduces long-term pain. However, it is important to follow post-operative care instructions closely to ensure a smooth recovery and prevent complications.
